Beomus at speed under a blue sky, both crew out on the wings
18ft Skiff · UK

Beomus

Built for speed

An 18-foot hull, a rig far taller than she is long, and wings out either side so her crew can hang their whole weight over the water. Beomus is an 18ft skiff, and she sails in UK waters.

The Class

From Sydney Harbour

The 18ft skiff began on Sydney Harbour in the 1890s, when the rule was simply an 18-foot hull and as much sail as the crew dared. More than a century on, the boats are carbon and the crews trapeze from wide wings instead of piling into the bilge, but the idea has not changed: the biggest rig the hull can carry, sailed on the edge.

They are among the fastest sailing dinghies there are, and they do not forgive mistakes. A capsize is part of a day out, not the end of one.

Her Story

Beomus and the club

A boat with that much rig takes more than her crew to get afloat: launching off the beach is a job for everyone within reach of a wing.
